Reliance Jio, the telecom major, has successfully rolled out its 4G and 5G services at the Siachen Glacier, marking a historic milestone for the company. In a social media post on Facebook, Reliance Jio announced the installation of a 5G base station in partnership with the Indian Army’s Fire and Fury Corps. This development makes Reliance Jio the first telecom operator in India to offer connectivity in the challenging region of Siachen, also known as the world’s highest battleground. The new 5G service will provide high-speed internet connectivity to Indian soldiers stationed at an altitude of 16,000 feet in the Karakoram range, an area that is notorious for its extreme weather conditions, with temperatures dropping to as low as -50°C.

The telecom operator emphasized that the services were rolled out using a plug-and-play pre-configured system deployed at a forward post. The accomplishment was made possible through extensive collaboration with Army Signallers, who assisted with planning, training, system pre-configuration, and rigorous testing. The Indian Army played a vital role in managing logistics, including airlifting the necessary equipment to the Siachen Glacier, ensuring the project’s successful execution.

Reliance Jio’s achievement underscores the company’s technological leadership and commitment to serving even the most remote and extreme regions of India. By providing reliable connectivity in such a difficult environment, Jio is enhancing communication and operational capabilities for the Indian Army. The deployment at Siachen is particularly significant, as it will improve coordination, access to critical information, and boost morale for the soldiers stationed in the area.

The launch of the 5G base station comes shortly after Reliance Jio announced its new “5.5G” network, which promises download speeds of up to 10 Gbps and upload speeds of up to 1 Gbps. This upgraded network also offers reduced latency, faster download speeds, and stable performance in crowded environments, utilizing advanced technologies like component carrier aggregation (3CC).

Reliance Jio, under its parent company Jio Platforms, has also expanded its digital offerings in recent months. The company has introduced several new products and services, including AI cloud services, 4G feature phones, and the Bluetooth tracker JioTag Go. Financially, Jio Platforms continues to perform well, reporting a 23.4% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to INR 6,539 Crore for the second quarter (Q2) of the financial year 2024-25. Operating revenue for the quarter surged by 18% YoY to INR 31,709 Crore.

With this remarkable feat at Siachen, Reliance Jio continues to set benchmarks in technological innovation and customer service across the country.
