Siblings Die by Suicide Due to Mounting Debt

In a heartbreaking incident in Gundlupet town, Chamarajanagara district, a 52-year-old woman and her 50-year-old brother have died by suicide, allegedly as a result of mounting financial debt. The siblings, who had borrowed money from women’s self-help groups and various money lenders to cover household and agricultural expenses, faced severe financial distress after their crops failed, leading to substantial losses.

On Wednesday night, the siblings reportedly ingested poison in an attempt to end their lives. The woman, experiencing severe abdominal pain, called for help, prompting neighbors to rush them to the hospital. Despite their urgent efforts, the woman succumbed to the poison on Wednesday night, while her brother passed away on Thursday morning. Initial investigations indicate that the siblings had accrued approximately ₹1 lakh in loans from both private lenders and self-help groups.

The police have registered an unnatural death report and have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. The growing pressure from loan repayments and the compounded stress from their financial situation appear to have contributed to their decision.

This tragic incident underscores the severe impact that financial strain can have on mental health and highlights the critical need for robust support systems for individuals facing economic hardships. It also serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of addressing financial and mental health challenges proactively.

If you or someone you know is struggling with debt or mental health issues, it is essential to seek help and support. There are numerous resources available, including financial counseling services and mental health support hotlines, which can offer assistance and guidance during difficult times. Reaching out for help can be a crucial step in navigating through financial and emotional distress.
