Spacetech startup Pixxel has launched three Firefly satellites and unveiled high-resolution hyperspectral images of key Earth regions. The images mark a major milestone in the company’s Earth observation efforts. Founder and CEO Awais Ahmad shared his excitement in a LinkedIn post, stating, “Excited to reveal first light images from all three of the Fireflies that launched recently! A new era in Earth observation begins now.”

The images, captured by the satellites launched on SpaceX’s Transporter-12 mission in January, focus on regions like the Ganga, Saloum River Delta, and the Sundarbans. They provide over 150 spectral bands, offering valuable insights into environmental conditions and land features.

Highlights of the Firefly Satellites

The Firefly-3 satellite captured images of the Ganga, showcasing its braided channels and floodplains. This data can help monitor soil moisture and vegetation health. The Firefly-2 satellite imaged the Saloum River Delta, providing insights into coastline shifts and salinity levels. Meanwhile, the Firefly-1 satellite focused on the Sundarbans, offering data to track mangrove health and support conservation planning.

Awais Ahmad told PTI, “We’re proud to unveil these pioneering images from Firefly, each pixel providing critical data for understanding Earth’s changes.” The Firefly satellites play a key role in detecting pollutants and offering early warnings for agricultural challenges using hyperspectral imaging.

Pixxel’s Plans for Expansion

Pixxel plans to launch three more satellites by mid-2025. These launches will help build a full-scale hyperspectral constellation by 2026. The startup aims to expand its Earth observation capabilities and provide advanced data for industries and policymakers across sectors.

Pixxel has also been shortlisted by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe). It is part of a consortium competing to build an Earth observation system for the Indian government.

Recent Funding and Future Prospects

Founded in 2018 by Awais Ahmad and Kshitij Khandelwal, Pixxel is building a constellation of hyperspectral satellites for Earth observation. The company targets sectors such as agriculture, mining, and environmental conservation.

Pixxel recently raised an additional $24 million in its Series B funding round. This brings the total Series B funding to $60 million. So far, Pixxel has raised about $95 million in total funding. Investors include Google, Radical Ventures, Accenture, Lightspeed, Blume Ventures, and growX.

With its innovative satellites and strong financial backing, Pixxel is set to expand its role in Earth observation and support industries with crucial environmental data.
