Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a significant order from the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (UPMRCL) for the design and construction of Phase 1, Line-2 of the Agra Metro network. This project aims to enhance urban mobility in Agra and involves constructing a 15.09 km elevated viaduct, 14 stations, and a 2.61 km depot that will connect Sadar Bazar to the PAC Depot.
The contract, valued at ₹1,242.79 crore, encompasses a comprehensive scope of work. This includes not only the construction of the viaduct and stations but also architectural finishes and essential electrical and mechanical works. The project is set to be completed within a tight deadline of 30 months, highlighting L&T’s commitment to timely execution.
Commenting on this achievement, Mr. S V Desai, Whole-time Director & Senior Executive Vice-President (Infrastructure) at L&T, emphasized the company’s pivotal role in urban infrastructure development. He noted that this contract is part of L&T’s ongoing contributions to modernizing India’s metro networks, showcasing its expertise in executing large-scale infrastructure projects.
The Agra Metro Line-2 will connect key areas in the city, facilitating smoother transportation for residents and visitors alike. The elevated stations are designed to improve accessibility and reduce congestion on existing roadways. This project is particularly significant as it represents L&T’s re-entry into elevated metro construction in northern India, following its involvement in various underground tunneling projects across the country.
Funding for this ambitious project will be provided by the European Investment Bank (EIB) through a €450 million loan, underscoring international confidence in India’s infrastructure development initiatives.
As L&T embarks on this new venture, stakeholders will be keenly observing the progress of the Agra Metro project, which promises to enhance urban mobility and contribute to the city’s overall development.
