OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is making its formal entry into India with plans to open its first corporate office in New Delhi in the coming months. The move marks a major milestone in the company’s global expansion, underscoring the growing importance of India in the global AI ecosystem.
OpenAI has already begun hiring for senior sales positions to strengthen its presence in the country. Until now, the company’s India operations have been led by Pragya Misra, who oversees public policy and partnerships. The expansion signals a broader commitment to one of OpenAI’s fastest-growing markets.
India is now ChatGPT’s second-largest user base, with weekly active usage having quadrupled over the past year. According to Jake Wilczynski, OpenAI’s Head of Asia-Pacific (APAC), India is also one of the top five developer markets globally and boasts the largest student base using ChatGPT anywhere in the world.
OpenAI’s India strategy aligns closely with national ambitions. The company has pledged its support for the $1.2 billion IndiaAI Mission, which aims to develop indigenous language models and bolster AI infrastructure. By establishing a local presence, OpenAI positions itself to engage more deeply with policymakers and contribute to the evolving AI regulatory landscape in India.
To make its tools more accessible, OpenAI recently launched ChatGPT Go in India at an affordable price of INR 399 per month, while continuing to offer both free and premium plans. This pricing strategy is aimed at democratizing access to advanced AI tools for Indian users, particularly students, developers, and startups.
As part of its growing engagement with the Indian developer ecosystem, OpenAI also announced plans to host its first-ever Developer Day in India later this year. The event will focus on showcasing innovation, local use cases, and building a stronger AI community.
With this expansion, OpenAI is not only deepening its user engagement but also actively contributing to India’s journey to become a global AI powerhouse.
