India’s active COVID-19 cases have climbed sharply, crossing the 6,000 mark and reaching 6,133 as of Sunday. This marks a dramatic rise from just 257 active cases reported on May 22, highlighting a sudden resurgence of the virus in several parts of the country.
In the last 48 hours alone, 769 new COVID-19 cases have been detected. The Union Health Ministry confirmed that six people have died from the disease in the past 24 hours, bringing the total COVID-19 death toll this year to 65. The spike in cases has prompted health authorities to intensify surveillance and preparedness efforts nationwide.
Kerala remains at the epicenter of the current surge, reporting the highest number of active cases among all states. Gujarat, West Bengal, and Delhi have also seen significant increases, with Delhi’s active cases now at 665 after 73 new cases were reported in the last day.
In response to the rising numbers, the government has launched mock drills across hospitals and health facilities to assess their readiness for a potential further increase in cases. States have been instructed to ensure the availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines to manage any spike in hospitalizations.
Health officials are closely monitoring the situation, particularly the spread of new Omicron sub-variants, which are believed to be driving the current wave. Most new infections are presenting with mild symptoms, but individuals with existing health conditions remain at higher risk for severe illness.
