Passenger vehicle sales in India reached a new milestone in December 2024, recording a total of 42.74 lakh units, marking a 4.2% increase compared to the previous year. This is the highest-ever sales figure for the segment, surpassing the 41.02 lakh units sold in 2023.
The category of passenger vehicles includes cars, utility vehicles (UVs), and vans. Notably, utility vehicles continued to drive the growth, with sales increasing by 16.8% to reach 27.50 lakh units. In contrast, sales of passenger cars witnessed a decline of 14.4%, totaling 13.71 lakh units.
The strong performance of utility vehicles, which include SUVs and MUVs, has been a key factor in pushing overall sales higher. As more consumers opt for larger, feature-rich vehicles, this trend is expected to continue in the coming years, contributing to further growth in the passenger vehicle segment.
This record sales figure reflects the ongoing recovery and growth in the automotive sector, despite the challenges posed by economic factors and changing consumer preferences.
