China is already feeling the worldwide hype surrounding Microsoft’s chatbot ChatGPT, which has lifted shares of AI companies and caused a rush of local startups to launch rival initiatives.
Can it compete with Google and Microsoft? Smaller start-ups and Chinese IT behemoths like Baidu and Alibaba have both engaged in AI initiatives in recent years.

Baidu Inc. said on February 7 that internal testing of the “Ernie Bot” project, which is modelled around ChatGPT, will be completed in March.
