Apple WWDC 2023: Apple is changing the ‘Hey Siri’ trigger phrase to just ‘Siri’ in iOS 17

Apple is going to change the trigger word for Siri from “Hey Siri” to just “Siri.” Following a report from Bloomberg in November that Apple was working on changing Siri to a single wake word, this move, which will be included in iOS 17, will make it simpler to call the virtual assistant on iPhones, iPads, Macs, and other devices. The change comes as a result of the story.

Because the underlying technical and training work is simpler versus a two-word trigger phrase, Apple has been utilising “Hey Siri” up until now. Even though it can seem like a minor change, switching to a single wake phrase is a substantial move. Users of Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant have the option of activating the assistant by saying “Hey Alexa” or just “Alexa.” Even Microsoft’s Cortana voice assistant permitted the usage of only “Cortana” as a wake word until it was discontinued on iOS and Android in 2021.

The “Google” wake word alone is not enough to activate Google Assistant; it still supports the “Hey Google” and “OK Google” phrases. If Google were to switch to a single wake word, then it would need to carefully examine how to prevent the assistant from activating during discussions in which Google is referenced. Currently, the assistant responds whenever Google is mentioned. Because Google is so dominant in the search industry, the company’s name has even been used as a verb.
