Apple WWDC 2023: Apple announces iOS 17

The much-anticipated iOS 17 was officially unveiled by Apple during the keynote presentation at WWDC 2023. The highlights include improved auto-correct and speech transcription, live voicemail, a new bedside mode, an integrated journaling app, additional safety features, and a built-in journaling app. Other new features include an improved auto-correct function and a new bedtime mode. You’ll also be able to remove the “hey” from the command “Hey, Siri.”

A new feature known as posters is being added to your contact book as part of an update. This tool transforms contact cards into dazzling graphics resembling marquees and displays them in full-screen mode on the iPhone of the receiver when you call them. They make use of a design language that is similar to that of the new lock screens, with choices for strong fonts and the capacity to include Memoji, and they are compatible with third-party VoIP applications. A new live transcription function has been added to voicemail, which enables users to read a transcript of the message that a caller is leaving in real time as it is being left by the caller. You have the option of waiting it out or picking up the phone, and either way, everything will be handled on the device. You’ll also have the ability to record a message to send over FaceTime.

The ability to filter searches with additional terms, a feature that jumps to the most recent message so that you can catch up more easily, transcriptions of voice messages (similar to what was introduced with the Pixel 7 series), and a series of new features called Check In that share your live location and status with someone else are some of the updates that have been made to messages. It is able to automatically send a message to a buddy when you get home, and it is able to communicate the battery and cell service status of your phone in order to help prevent confusion if you are in an area where there is no cell service.

Stickers are also receiving a makeover, with the option to add any emoji or picture cutout as a “sticker” that can be positioned on iMessages or anywhere else inside the system. This change is part of the iOS 12 update. You can now apply effects to stickers, and live photographs may now be converted into animated stickers.

Just by bringing two iPhones close enough, users will be able to communicate their chosen email addresses and phone numbers (in addition to their poster) with an upgrade to AirDrop that is being creatively referred to as NameDrop. This update will convey contact information. It is also possible to communicate between an iPhone and an Apple Watch using this method. The same method may be used to exchange photographs, and if the file being downloaded is a large one, it is now feasible to walk out of range while the download is still in progress.

iOS 17 also offers upgrades to the keyboard, including improvements to autocorrect and other features. It now uses a new language model, which improves its accuracy, and it also provides a shortcut that makes it simpler to return to the word you typed before, in case that becomes essential. There is now something called in-line predictive typing in addition to sentence-level autocorrections, which together may correct a greater number of grammatical errors. It will eventually learn your preferred curse words, and Apple’s Craig Federighi even cracked a “ducking” joke during the presentation. In addition, Dictation uses an updated AI model that is more precise.

A brand new programme that goes by the name Journal will provide suggestions to you on the occasions that it thinks you should record in your journal. You may add images, songs, and events to your posts, and you can set reminders on your calendar to get yourself to start writing. In addition, it is encrypted from beginning to end in order to maintain users’ privacy.

Standby is a new charging mode that transforms the display of the device into a status display that shows the current date and time. It automatically turns on when your phone is in landscape orientation while charging and can display information from live activities, widgets, and smart stacks. Swiping to the right allows you to see some of your highlighted photographs, and it comes with a variety of clockfaces that may be customised. Siri will provide visual results when on standby, and in the evening, the display will change to a red tone so as not to disturb the user’s sleep.

The last but not least improvement is that Siri now allows you to skip saying “hey” before activating her by saying “Hey Siri.” It is also able to recognise instructions given back-to-back.

This new version of iOS follows a significant upgrade that was introduced in iOS 16, which includes a substantial makeover of the lock screen, helpful iMessage capabilities like editing and unsending, and the introduction of time-sensitive Live Activities that emerged in the Dynamic Island. It was an upgrade that was focused on letting you accomplish more with your phone while also requiring you to go into applications for basic activities less often.

Even though iOS 16 had a lot of positive aspects, the update wasn’t really a revolutionary step forward. It provided some helpful enhancements to the quality of life, but there was nothing about it that fundamentally altered the way in which we use our phones. It also highlighted the differences between the iPhone 14 Pro and the ordinary iPhone 14 by highlighting the fact that only the Pro version of the iPhone 14 has features such as an always-on display and Dynamic Island, both of which make the greatest use of the improvements.
