The Cupertino-based tech giant unveiled the highly anticipated next-generation iPhone 15 and a new lineup of Apple Watches, both of which incorporate eco-friendly materials and practices to reduce their environmental footprint.
Phase-Out of Plastic and Leather with ‘FineWoven’
Apple’s latest endeavor involves the gradual elimination of plastic and leather from its product range. Instead, the company is opting for a revolutionary material called ‘FineWoven.’ This innovative material, made from recycled sources, offers a luxurious and durable microtwill that comprises an impressive 68 percent post-consumer recycled content. The result is a substantial reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional leather products.
FineWoven makes its debut in the bands for the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, marking these as Apple’s first-ever carbon-neutral products. To complement this eco-conscious shift, Apple has also redesigned the packaging for the Apple Watch, now crafted entirely from fiber-based materials. The new packaging features a distinctive logo indicating which models are carbon neutral.
Furthermore, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 represents a significant shift in materials usage, with over 95 percent of its composition being recycled titanium. This change is a remarkable departure from the previous model, which relied on 100 percent virgin titanium.
All of these eco-friendly changes align with Apple’s ambitious goals to incorporate more recycled materials and achieve net-zero carbon production by 2030. To realize this vision, Apple is collaborating with over 50 suppliers across the United States, Europe, and Asia. Together, they aim to reduce emissions by an impressive 75 percent by the end of the decade.

During the iPhone 15 launch event, Apple showcased its dedication to sustainability through a thought-provoking skit. Apple CEO Tim Cook and Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer made a special appearance in the skit, where they engaged in a corporate meeting scene.
In the video, Cook addressed his fellow Apple employees and urged them to provide a progress report on the company’s environmental initiatives to “Mother Nature” (played by Spencer). The video humorously emphasized the significance of Apple’s sustainability efforts.
Spencer, portraying Mother Nature, questioned the progress made toward Apple’s commitment to bring its entire carbon footprint to zero by 2030. Cook responded confidently, stating, “By 2030, all Apple devices will have a net-zero climate impact.” He underscored the company’s dedication to building a more sustainable future for our planet.
Apple employees in the skit shared several key updates, including the shift toward ocean shipping over air, the removal of all plastic from packaging, and investments in global projects aimed at protecting the Earth’s soil, plants, and trees. The message was clear: Apple is innovating and retooling its processes to minimize its environmental impact comprehensively.
