Sensex slips 194 points, Nifty closes below 18,500; broader markets outperform

Even though the GDP numbers for the fourth quarter came in higher than predicted and even though the House of Representatives voted to adopt a plan to increase the debt limit, domestic stock prices closed the day in the negative. The broad-based NSE Nifty50 index lost 48.50 percent, or 0.26 percent, to finish at 18,485.90, while the benchmark BSE Sensex fell 193.70 points, or 0.31 percent, to conclude at 62,428.54.

The performance of broader markets was generally superior during today’s session, as seen by the fact that the Nifty Smallcap 50 advanced by 1.03 percent, the Nifty Smallcap 100 advanced by 0.99 percent, and the Nifty Smallcap 250 advanced by 0.81 percent.

The real estate market index rose 0.95 percent today, which was followed by the healthcare market index, which rose 0.89 percent. The pharmaceutical index rose today by 1 percent.

In the meantime, the Nifty Bank index plummeted by 0.77 percent, the Nifty Private Bank index dropped by 0.71 percent, and the Nifty Financial Services index sank by 0.67 percent.

Today, Coal India had the largest decline in value relative to the Nifty 50 index. Other top decliners were Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bharti Airtel, SBI Life, HDFC Life, ICICI Bank, ITC, and UPL. Coal India had the largest decline in value relative to the index.

On the other side, the top gainers during today’s session were Apollo Hospitals, Divis Lab, Bajaj Auto, Tata Motors, Hero MotoCorp, Asian Paints, Cipla, and Sun Pharma.
